In this 2-day hands-on/interactive watercolor workshop with international artist Pamme Turner, students will learn skill-building with new concepts, color theory and mixing techniques---as well as using targeted painting exercises to strengthen brushwork and enhance new application methods-- taking watercolor paintings to the next level! Students will leave the workshop with a notebook full of special tips/techniques to improve their own painting as well as completing a finished watercolor painting each day. Designed for students with a basic understanding of the watercolor medium who want to learn and apply new techniques/approaches and strengthen painting skills and confidence in their own works.

Topics include: Improving/applying understanding of VALUES, COMPOSITION, COLOR THEORY/MIXING, MOISTURE "TIMING", NEGATIVE PAINTING, BRUSHWORK -- controlling water usage, "paint thickness", blending/ textural techniques and understanding the concept of "finish" -- all valuable techniques to add to your own "Watercolor-Technique Toolbox".
How to identify/ create strong watercolor compositions as the basis for successful painting
How to create thumbnails/sketches to establish the focal point and value plan of your composition
How to use a limited color palette and basic mixes as a foundation for "clean" painting
How to understand brush/water-use and varietal brushstrokes for successful and fresh!! watercolor applications
How to bring the watercolor painting to life, adding easy figures/dark value accents/ bold calligraphic marks
How to use gouache as an addition to your finished watercolors (sunny highlights/ accents/ "sky-holes")
As a professional artist with BFA/MFA degrees in Fine Arts and technical expertise in multiple and diverse art mediums, Pamme Turner is an art professor and former EI Department Chair of Fine and Liberal Arts at Saddleback College in Southern California (23 years full time faculty/Department Chair). Her teaching expertise includes classes in Beginning through Advanced Watercolor and Oil/Acrylic Painting, Plein Air Painting, Intermediate/Advanced Studio Painting, Life Drawing, Ceramics and Art History.
She has lived and taught fine arts classes and art workshops all over the world - including in art schools, colleges, and in museums and universities on the East and West coasts (US), at Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) in Laguna Beach, California (9 years/full time faculty/Department Chair-Ceramics); in Mexico (Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende); in Spain, Italy and Greece and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as teaching and leading numerous study abroad/ plein air painting workshops worldwide, most recently twice in Cuba.
She lived and worked for more than four years on the Greek island of Paros at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts, teaching Painting, Drawing, Sculpture/Ceramics, Art History and Greek Folkloric Dance. Her watercolors, gouache and egg tempera paintings, drawings and ceramics are included in museum collections and numerous exhibitions and private collections worldwide.
Her work has been exhibited in national and international venues, including in NYC, Los Angeles and Athens, Greece. She says: "Every day, my changing environment, either on location or in the studio, teaches me a unique artist's lesson...to observe and react, not to preconceive the medium, method or outcome, to evaluate, interpret, focus and respond and...ultimately, to stay out of my own creative way."
Materials are required, below is the list of suggested materials:
Paper: 140lb cold press or rough, suggested brands are Arches, Fabriano, Saunders Waterford, Hahnemuhle, or other cotton rag in 10"x14" or 12"x16" sheets or blocks. Need 12-15 sheets.
Brushes: Wash Brushes/Mop-style/Round / (Squirrel Mop or large-ish wash brushes, sizes- #14 or#18 or #20) Flat Brushes(soft): 1 inch or 0 inch (OR can be synthetic GOAT hair Hake-style brush,1-1 1/2 inches) Round Brushes: variety of sizes-# 6 or,8,10,12 (natural hair or synthetic, must all point well!!) Rigger or Detail Brush (for both gouache/watercolor detail!)
