Amethyst Genuine is a rich, true purple--it's almost black in masstone and capable of infinite gradation. Although it is a granulating color, it can also make lovely clear washes with just the barest hint of sparkle from the crushed gemstone.
DANIEL SMITH created the PrimaTek line of paints made from minerals, some semi-precious, beginning in 1998 with a cache of Lapis Lazuli. They have a mineralogist who sources minerals which we process into pigment, then mill it into watercolor. PrimaTeks express themselves with gorgeous granulation, giving a sense of movement and depth that some artists have described as magical.
