Flax Seed Packet
Our Price: $1.99
An annual plant with historical significance, flax produces bright red or pale blue flowers. Considered a seminal crop of modern civilization, flax was among the first domesticated plants. Uses over the centuries range from Ancient Egyptian Linen to today's wood finishing products.
Flax has also been significant in the artist's world. Its fibers yield fabric for high quality linen canvas, while linseed oil, harvested from flax, is used in the production of paint, painting mediums, printing inks and even linoleum for block printing.
We wanted to share this bit of history with you and invite you to plant some flax of your own. We hope that the flowers will not only embellish your surroundings with their beautiful blooms, but that you can appreciate this amazing little plant.
Planting Information and Tips
This flax seed is the annual variety, called Linum usitatissiumum.
In small pots, plant seeds and keep them in a sunny place. Water them often enough that the soil does not dry out. Be patient, as they can take a while to germinate.
If you live in a colder climate, flax is best started indoors, and then moved to your garden after several weeks. This way your plants can mature before dealing with harsh weather changes.
Flax will flower about 2 months after planting and can be harvested after about three months.
