Gouache is a type of paint that consists of pigment and water. It has a higher concentration of pigment compared to watercolor and contains chalk or other white pigment, giving it more an opaque, buttery consistency. It can create washes as a ground color like watercolors. However, it cannot be remove just as easily. If layered too much, the water mixed in can make the gouache lose its flat, matte appearance and wipe the paint that is already on the painting surface. Colors also tend to dry lighter for dark tones and darker for light tones. It is recommended to test colors before applying onto your work.
