Hard Pastels & Artist Crayons
Pick a sub-category:
Hard pastels are made of pigment that has been bound together with an inert binder. They contain less pigment than soft pastels, but because of their hard density, more pressure can be applied to make darker and sharper marks. These are great to you after using soft pastels to create fine details and edges. Because of the lack of pigment in hard pastels, they are less vibrant when put together with soft pastels.
Also available are artist crayons, which are composed of either graphite or charcoal that as been blended together with a wax or clay base, giving it its crayon-like quality. These are designed for making quick rough sketches and compositional studies in the preliminary stage. They can be sanded down to create a sharp point and are good for shading and crosshatching. They are affordable because of the materials used to create them and can be found in black, white, and sanguine tones.
